Frescobaldi: F13.22.01. Balletto

Incipit 13.22.01

Scoring: Keyboard
Genre: Dance
Key/Signature: C /♮
Main Source: Paris 64

Notes: Scribe: Frescobaldi. The tune closely resembles a song set by Johann Jacob Froberger as “die Maÿerin” (FbWV 606), and by Johann Adam Reincken as “Schweiget mir von Weibern nehmen, altrimente chiamata [also called] la Meyerin.” The text named by Reincken has been connected with a poem by Georg Greflinger (c.1620-1677), “Schweiget mir vom Frauen nehmen,” although chronology argues against the melody originating with this poem. Nevertheless the apparent connection of a tune in a Frescobaldi manuscript with a presumably German song set by Froberger is curious. Frescobaldi, Froberger, and Reincken all follow their version of the tune with one or more variations.
