The Frescobaldi Thematic Catalogue Online
Frescobaldi (possibly): F14.12. Toccata prima
Scoring: Keyboard
Genre: Toccata
Key/Signature: C /♮
Main Source: Chigi Q.IV.25
Notes: Scribe: Nicolò Borbone. Several scholars have speculated that the three toccatas F 14.12, F 14.13, and F 14.14 might be the work of Johann Jacob Froberger, possibly written in Rome while he was studying with Frescobaldi (see Silbiger [1980-1] and Asperen [2009]), and Siegbert Rampe has included them in his Froberger edition for Bärenreiter as “works of uncertain authority.” Leonhardt (1968) had earlier suggested a connection of F 14.14 with Froberger, but Naomi Barker conducted a statistical analysis, which according to her indicates that the three toccatas were not written by either Frescobaldi or Froberger--nor by Michelangelo Rossi for that matter (personal communication).
