Frescobaldi: F19.04H. Couranta

Incipit 19.04H

Scoring: C, C, Bc
Genre: Corrente
Key/Signature: E / ##
Main Source: Kindermann (1640)

Notes: A setting of F 2.17 scored for two treble viols or flutes and one bass viol (2 Diskant Violen oder 2 Flöten und einer Bass viol), transposed up a major second to E minor. The bass viol part is figured, so that it can also be used for organ, lute, or theorbo (mit Signis und Numeris gezeichnet für einem Organ. - theorb. - oder Lautenisten componirt). Only the bass viol part has survived (in I-Bc: AA 142). A viol part of a 1643 edition, reported in the early 20th century as residing in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek (Mus. ant. K.186), we have not been able to trace. The Couranta is paired by a Ballet, also in E minor, by Kindermann himself.
